I never set out to build the biggest company. I just wanted to build things the right way, with people who feel the same.
The guys on my crew aren't just showing up for a paycheck. They care. When something doesn't look right, they stop and fix it. Not because I told them to, but because it would bother them to leave it. You can't train that into somebody. You either find people who have it or you don't. I've been lucky.
The best part of this job is handing someone the keys to something you built for them. A family walking into their new home for the first time, or a farmer pulling up to a barn that's actually laid out the way he needs it. You can see it on their face. That's the whole reason we do this.
I don't need to be the guy who does the most jobs in a year. I want to be the guy who does every job in a way I'm proud of. When I drive past something we built ten years from now, I want to feel good about it. Not wish we'd had more time.
So we take the time. We worry about the stuff nobody will ever see behind the drywall, because we know it's there. We treat every project like our name is on it. Around Middlebury, it is.
